More Than Just a Tag: Why You Should Microchip Your Pet

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month: a reminder that keeping our pet safe starts long before they ever go missing.

No pet owner expects their dog or cat to run away, but accidents can happen in seconds. A gate is left open, a loud noise startles your pet, or someone forgets to close the front door. Even pets that spend their lives indoors can accidentally get out.

According to SPCA Singapore Annual Report 2023/2024, in 2024, 459 lost pets were successfully reunited with their owners, claimed or released. Of these, 176 were dogs, 276 were cats, and 7 were other types of pets. These numbers highlight the importance of ensuring pets can be identified and returned home as quickly as possible.

In Singapore, microchipping isn’t just recommended as a safety measure - it is also a legal requirement for licensed dogs. Under Singapore’s cat management framework, pet cats are now required to be microchipped for licensing as well.

If your pet goes missing, the quickest way for someone to identify them is often their collar.

Imagine your dog wandering into a nearby HDB estate and a resident notices the phone number on their tag. A simple phone call could reunite both of you within minutes.

However, collars aren’t perfect.

They can:

• Break during rough play
• Slip off while running
• Get caught on fences
• Wear out over time
• Be removed if your pet is stolen

That’s where microchips become invaluable.

Unlike collars, a microchip stays with your pet for life. It cannot fall off, be accidentally removed, or become unreadable.

Having both significantly increases the chances of a lost pet finding their way home.

A pet microchip is a tiny electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted just under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades.

The procedure is quick and similar to a routine vaccination. Once implanted, the  microchip lasts for your pet’s lifetime and doesn’t require batteries or charging.

Each microchip contains a unique identification number that can be read using a special scanner. When a veterinarian, shelter, or animal welfare organization scans the microchip, the unique identification number is used to retrieve your contact details from a registered database.

After the procedure, the vet will provide a microchip number, which you must register online.
